IN THIS MONTH'S FAMILY MATTERS ...

"It started with S.H.I.F.T. and it continued in every branch that they have in their program. It really targets every part of your life that breaks the cycle with the struggles of being homeless and the struggles of mental health and physical health and taking care of yourself and getting into a career that you can manage with your disabilities."

- Elizabeth, Metropolitan DuPage client

Celebrating Week of the Young Child

Week of the Young Child was April 1 - 7 this year celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities. Metropolitan Family Services offers many programs to support young children. To learn more about our Early Learning centers, click here.

woyc1.jpg Children and teachers at DuPage Center's Bensenville Early Learning Center and St. Andrews Head Start, created instruments and planned a "concert" during Music Monday and Work Together Wednesday. They then invited their parents to attend their concert to conclude the week!

Our Calumet Altgeld Early Learning Coalition continued their efforts to celebrate children succeeding in early learning. The Coalition hosted a March Madness pop-up shop, where families learned the benefits of an early childhood education and assisted in enrolling their children into an educational program. In addition, staff from Calumet attended the Annual Illinois Head Start Association Conference in Peoria, IL. Staff participated in professional development in education and coaching practices, and family engagement support. They also reflected on strategies for children to successfully launch their early learning education.

A group of current and retired employees from NOKIA, who call themselves “StrongHER”, cleaned and organized the Gift In Kind room at our DuPage Center in March. The room is storage space for new items donated from the community, often home and personal essentials from our shelter needs list. Having an organized space will help us better understand our current inventory, and our upcoming needs, in order to better support clients in a critical time. Being able to fill immediate personal needs from the room also allows our staff to support individuals in other significant ways.

We're honored to be recognized for the Seeds of Change Award!

We at MFS are honored to be jointly recognized, along with our We Grow Chicago partners Imagine Englewood If, Teamwork Englewood and Grow Greater Englewood, for the Seeds of Change Award, which will be presented by our fellow partner agency Growing Home this month. The Award recognizes “long-standing partners who work collectively to resolve pressing issues in our neighborhoods.”

Workshop (4).png  We are excited to announce this year’s MLAB Wine Mixer for June 7th, 2023! MLAB is Metropolitan's Young Professionals' Board, and the Wine Mixer supports MFS’ mission to empower children and families to learn, earn, heal, and thrive. It also supports our Legal Aid Society's mission to provide equal access to justice for our most vulnerable citizens.
